On Wednesday evening at 11:59 I won’t be sad to see 2008 become part of history. To say the least, it was a tough year for me. I spent my first entire calendar year as a graduate student while working a full time job. It wasn’t easy but it was a learning experience (no pun intended). I started a new job in June and worked long hours in the office all summer. As the year went on I learned that I was really struggling to stay sane and happy. So, in 2009 I am making a promise to put myself first more often.

I pledge to not beat myself up if I only make it to the gym twice in a week. I pledge to sleep in on Sundays when I have no where to be. And, I pledge to bake once a month, for someone or some reason. I think that’s a good list to start. To kick off my year about me, I’m going to an excellent scrapbooking retreat that is held annually in CT, about 45 minutes from my parents. It is 48 hours of creativity, fun, and a whole lot of estrogen. I went two years ago and had a wonderful time, so I’m using my Chanukah money to go again this year. I will FINALLY be able to start my wedding album. Woohoo!

Here I sit, in the commuter’s lounge with about half a dozen other future MBAs, wallowing in the pain of my first Stats exam. I know I complain about exams and usually get a good grade, but this exam is beyond anything I could have imagined. I will be praying to the gods of The Curve that his professor is a believer.

The worst part is… I have to go back to class now for another 3 hours to learn MORE statistics. I think I’ve died and gone to hell.

I will be making macaroni and cheese with ham from scratch tonight.

Kate + Statistics Exam = Comfort Food & Alcohol

I took my first Accounting exam last night and I feel pretty good about it. You should know that I broke out in to tears on a weekly basis while completing my accounting homework… so when it cam time to study for the exam I almost called in dead.

Accounting must have been developed by a man because it is so illogical and complicated, only a man could find pleasure in figuring it out. I get hives just thinking about accounting.

On a positive note, I’ve completed 9 credits in the program and will have 15 by May! I’ll be 1/3 done! Woohoo!

Oh, what I meant was, I earned my first 3 MBA credits today. I’ve now completed the most tedious course at FDU, Executive Communication and Leadership, which was an extrordinary amount of work. I did learn a few things though, and I have some good books for my bookshelf… whenever people start banging down my door to give speeches. That leaves me with 4 more class and a final exam for Marketing Concepts and then I’ll have 6 credits. Woohoo!

I registered for Entrepreneurial Studies during the Winter Session (5 Saturdays before the Spring Semester starts). Then I’ll do Organizational Behavior on Tuesday nights in the Spring and Statistical Analysis for 5 Saturdays from March to April. That means by the time we go on the cruise in May, I’ll have 15 credits. YAY! I’ll be 1/3 done. Now all I need is someone to pay my tuition bills…

So… FDU decided they’d like my money and they’ve accepted me into the MBA program! Woohoo! Now all I have to do is pay and pass!

I already hate the Graduate Program Advisor, she’s a miserable woman who probably has way to much work to do so she’s evil all day long. I really don’t want to go up to school for orientation just to listen to this crotchety woman talk but I think it’s inevitable. I have to pick up my alumni “voucher” that tells the registration office to knock $100/credit off my tuition. Then I have to actually register for classes. Joy!

So I think I’m going to take “Executive Communication and Leadership” and “Marketing Concepts” my first semester. I’m trying to avoid the math-ish classes at first to ease in to the swing of grad school. I feel like an imposter in this program… I imagine one day next year someone in the admissions office will realize they admitted this crazy liberal arts girl into the business program and they’ll revoke my credits lol. It could happen!

So I took the GMAT exam on Saturday (Graduate Management Admission Test for those of you not in the know) and it wasn’t fun.

Two 30 minute Analytical Writing sections

One 75 minute Quantitative (math) section

One 75 minute Verbal (English) section

The test is “adaptive” so that it adjusts to give you harder/easier questions based on whether you got the previous question correct or incorrect. Fun huh? So it’s about 4 hours of bliss in total silence. In fact, I was given ear plugs to wear during the exam, I had to raise my hand when I wanted to get up and wait for the proctor to signal that I could leave my seat, and I had to give them a digital finger print to identify me (using their scanner).

The good news is the test gives instant gratification and spits out a test-takers Quantitative and Verbal results immediately. I scored in the 60% percentile in the Verbal and writing sections. I was 46% percent in the math section. Overall, I’m way over what I needed for FDU and very happy with my above average score overall. I didn’t kill myself studying but I did what I could. Yay, it’s over!

So once again I’ve neglected to be good with updates, so here is a group of them in one go:

Job Hunt:
I am continuing my quest to find a better job at a better company. I have applied to numerous wonderful companies and institutions and am hoping to hear positive news from one of them soon enough. I have unfortunately received a few rejection letters but I am determined to remain positive.

Health:
Things are significantly better on this front. Since the surgery I am up 32.5 pounds. I am actually .5 pounds above my goal weight which is amazing. I’ve had a lot more energy than I can remember having and my physical strength is up. My emotional health has also been affected and in general I am a lot more happy than I had been. For the geeks, a summary: Surgery++

Bike:
Due to the stress of work, time consumption of finding a new job and most importantly the horribly hot weather I had not gotten much of a chance to ride. I had also been kind of scared to attempt to make a trip anywhere and failing. Yesterday instead of doing a quick little fun ride on the same path I always take I made a trip to the local farmers market. The ride went wonderful and I returned home with everything I needed to pick up and more. Very happy about that. I do need to bring the bike into the shop for some free maintenance. The handlebars are a bit loose and are now not 100% lined up with the front tire and there are a few other small things I want taken care of.

Photography:
The decision of what to do for a camera has been answered. My father has decided he is getting a newer camera so I’ll be purchasing his camera from him. It’s a Pentax *ist ds, 6.1MP DSLR with a 18-55mm lens. This is a great starting setup and in time I hope to purchase myself a nice telephoto lens. I am very excited and now just can’t wait for him to get the new one so I can start taking photos again. He said regardless I can borrow it for our vacation next month.

MBA:
On Saturday Kate will be taking her GMAT and once she receives her score she’ll finish the application process for her MBA program. Her company is awesome and has a tuition reimbursement program so we’re very excited for her to go and get her MBA. Once she finishes she’ll be an even greater asset to the business world and I am sure her career is going to skyrocket. I have to say I am envious of her. I am hoping once I get a new job my career can have as great of an outlook as hers and then I can go and get my MBA and make it even better.

Vacation:
Kate and I will be going to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for vacation of Labor Day weekend. We’re very excited as it will be our first vacation just the two o f us since our honeymoon. We had plans to go to Boston for our one year anniversary but that was right when the major issues with my Crohn’s started up. Instead of Boston for a long weekend I spent it at the hospital. We’re finally making up for that now!

That’s just about it for now. Stay tuned

Dave and I attended MBA Night at FDU last night. I can honestly say that I am impressed with their program and faculty and I no longer feel like it’s a half-assed Business School. They are AACSB accredited, which apparently only one third of B-schools in the US hold this distinction. They have 5-week Saturday intensive classes so I can get an entire 3 credit class done in 5 weeks. They also offer night classes and have 3 summer sessions.

I’m mostly interested in the Pharmaceutical Management track. It consists of 12 credits, or 4 classes, of Pharma background that I’m hoping will lend nicely to my work at Bristol-Myers. So in the fall I’ll start with one night class and one Saturday class and see how it goes. All I have to do now is not fall asleep at the GMATs next month and I’ll be registered before the middle of August. Eek!

Due to the facts that my company does not do an Tuition assistance, Kate’s does and the two of us trying to do our MBA programs at the same time may be rough I’ve decided to hold off on beginning my MBA program.

UPDATE: It’s been brought to my attention that this post is barely in English. A translation:

My company does not offer Tuition reimbursement so financing my education will be hard. Kate’s company however DOES offer a VERY good program. Even with her company offering us a huge amount it would be too difficult for us both to go at the same time. Not to mention the stres of maintaining our lives with both of us busy in school; so I’ve decided to hold off on my MBA. This is a TEMPORARY setback.

English is my friend
